SENIOR PETS AND THEIR SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Our hospital is dedicated to the health and well-being of your pet.  If your pet is now over the age of 7 he/she may have special needs with respects to his/her nutritional requirements, veterinary health care and level of activity.

In human years a 7 year old cat is 44 years old, a small dog is also 44 years old, a medium dog is 47 years old and a large dog is 50 years old.

Pets at 7 years of age and older are at an increased risk for developing age-related conditions such as arthritis, liver and kidney disease.

In many instances, the changes are subtle - our pets may continue to act normally while coping with an underlying disease.  For this reason, we recommend a physical examination that will include a senior wellness profile (blood & urine tests).  This profile can provide a normal baseline for comparison to future test results or it may detect signs of disease.  Early detection and prompt treatment of disease can significantly prolong and impact the quality of your pet's life.  Based on the results from the wellness profile and physical examination, we will determine your senior pet's optimum nutritional requirements.

INTRODUCING OUR NEW VACCINE CHOICE

Dear Dog Owners,

As part of our continuing effort to provide the best care for your pet, we would like to make you aware of a change in our vaccination program.  We vaccinate your dog on a regular basis against distemper, adenovirus (hepatitis) and parvovirus.  We have decided to switch to a product that provides 3 years of protection against these diseases with just one shot.

This product, Continuum DAP, has been approved for 3-year protection and has an excellent safety record.

In recent years, there has been growing concern about over vaccination of pets.  The American Animal Hospital Association and major universities have recommended vaccinating every 3 years for certain dog diseases, including distemper, adenovirus, and parvovirus.  With Continuum DAP we can follow these recommendations.  And giving only one shot every 3 years may mean greater comfort and safety for your dog.

Please note that although your dog will now only receive this vaccine every 3 years, it will not in any way affect the timing or frequency of your visits to our clinic. Your pet may still require other vaccinations such as Rabies, kennel cough, etc., as well as a physical examination. This vaccine is only one part of your dog’s overall care, and regularly scheduled visits are necessary to maintain your dog’s health.  The doctors will still access your risk and situation and make recommendations based on these facts.

We feel it is important to let you know of any changes in the care we provide for your dog.  Please don’t hesitate to contact our office if you have any questions about this change.  You may also learn more about this new product by visiting www.continuumforpets.com

 Sincerely,

The Doctors at Strathmore Veterinary Clinic
